School Health Infrastructure

An important aspect of the Coordinated School Health initiative is assisting school districts in building infrastructure to support physical and mental health services for students. In 2009, the La. Legislature passed Act 286, which mandated the formation of School Health Advisory Councils (SHACs). These councils advise school boards on student health issues such as physical education and nutrition. The Picard Center is providing technical assistance and evaluating implementation of the SHACs.

Other initiatives in school health infrastructure include working with state agencies on projects such as Schools Putting Prevention to Work (SPPW) and electronic student health records (eSHR).
